1999–2004
Where did I travel within the Chicago city limits from mid-February through early March during the years 1999–2000–2001?
This series reflects Ryan’s ongoing interest in pathways and the structures that guide daily life. Beginning from the observation that we move through cities along routes built and repeated by others, he considered Chicago as a constructed environment composed of boundaries, histories, and unseen rooms. Each drawing records small shifts in movement—taking a different turn, avoiding traffic, retracing a familiar road—transforming everyday decisions into a visual record. All boundaries have a story to tell. Together, the works highlight how habitual gestures inscribe personal and collective maps of place.
